FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Local TV Program Focuses Lens On Classic Movies
KVOS, Pickford Film Center and WWU Launch Weekly TV Show

BELLINGHAM, March 2, 2010–Contact Suzanne Blais, 510-6902. Tune in to KVOS TV12 Sundays at 8 p.m. and you might be surprised by what you see. KVOS TV12, Pickford Film Center and Western Washington University have partnered to bring area viewers more locally-flavored television in a brand new series called “The Pickford Classic Movie.” Each week Michael Falter, Program Director of Pickford Film Center, and Professor Kaveh Askari from WWU’s English Department provide trivia, little-known facts, interesting back story and conversation about a different classic film throughout the film’s airing.
As Program Director of the Pickford Film Center Michael Falter gets to preview some of the world’s best movies. However, the pleasure of discovery doesn’t fade with time. “Revisiting the classic films from Hollywood and around the world with Kaveh is like digging up a fantastic time capsule--the passage of time has only increased my passion for these films as they not only shaped film history, but tell us about our own in ways their creators never imagined. Dusting off these treasures and sharing our discoveries is pure pleasure."

KVOS, Bellingham's own television station, is getting back to its roots by producing more local content. Currently airing “Experience Northwest” with Deb Slater, Channel 12 has also created a spin-off featurette called “ENW Community Update.” These 2-minute stories are broadcast daily and are also available on the web. Additionally, four more locally focused shows are in development, including a sports show, two issues-oriented programs and a music review show.

KVOS Vice President and General Manager Bill Wright sees local programming as vital to the next stage of the station’s growth.  “We want KVOS to be an exciting and relevant destination for our viewers. Providing more local programming will help us create that.” Askari also see a local connection.  Says Askari, "I love the way the show creates a sense that we’re watching the movie together.  One of my favorite things about the Puget Sound region is how passionate we are that our culture (like our food) stays tied to the local community.  When we watch an old movie as a community, we become a part of that movie’s history.”
You can watch the “Pickford Classic Movie” every Sunday at 8 p.m. on KVOS TV12.
