Robert Davidson is a living legend among First Nations artists, with presence in numerous private and public collections. At times this intimate look at his work is quiet and mesmerizing, featuring close-ups of Davidson’s precise tools as he meticulously creates totem poles, masks, paintings, and prints. Combined with Davidson’s perception of the current state of western culture, it makes for a provocative and entrancing documentary. Davidson says, “I’m still a student. I’m still learning about the art, through the art and more-and-more about our history.” It’s a history we’re able to glean a better understanding of through Haida Modern.
