Eyes Without a Face

THIRD EYE series sponsored by CHEBA HUT Dr. Génessier is riddled with guilt after an accident that he caused disfigures the face of his daughter, the once beautiful Christiane, who outsiders believe is dead. Dr. Génessier, along with accomplice and laboratory assistant Louise, kidnaps young women and brings them to the Génessier mansion. After rendering his victims unconscious, Dr. Génessier removes their faces and attempts to graft them on to Christiane's. PROGRAMMED BY MIGUEL GARDUNO MUNOZ, PROJECTIONIST Can a horror film be poetic? When I first watched this film, I went into it knowing very little about it other than it is considered a masterpiece of horror cinema. I came out of that screening underwhelmed, but felt that perhaps on second viewing, with my expectations set correctly, I would therefore enjoy it more. I was correct. EYES WITHOUT A FACE is a dark fairy tale masquerading as a mad scientist horror film. Horror is not just about sudden gasps and frivolous jerks. It is about making the viewer live and experience the horror endured by the protagonist. Only such an intrinsic and intricately construed horror story will leave an indelible impression and disconcert the mind of the viewer like no other. This is a masterpiece not only of realistic horror but also of subtle and sublime beauty. Director George Franju crafts a film that is rich in wistful atmosphere. The film, despite having moments of quiet brutality, is equally gothic and charming. The films almost medieval style musical score also points to the film being more a fairy tale than a horror, whose scores are typically more abrasive or droning. To paint this film with the horror film brush would be doing it a disservice, as Franju creates something more understated and fantastical.DramaPT1H30M2024-07-13
