First We Bombed New Mexico

DOCTOBER, OFFICIAL SELECTION. RECORDED Q&A w/ FILMMAKER LOIS LIPMAN AND PROTAGONIST TINA CORDOVA INCLUDED WITH BOTH SCREENINGS CO-PRESENTED BY NO MORE BOMBS + PRESENTED BY WWU POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT It is baked into the wartime lore of the United States that dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki is what effectively ended World War II. This is celebrated as a necessary feat of invention and military might. What is little known is that before dropping Fat Man and Little Boy, the U.S. military detonated a test bomb in the New Mexico desert, at a bomb site known as Trinity. The radiation left behind has been devastating for the “downwinders,” mostly Indigenous and Hispanic, who still live adjacent to the Trinity site. For generations they have been ignored—but now they are fighting back, and they will not be silenced.DocumentaryPT1H35M2024-10-05
