Blurring the boundaries between personal essay, investigative journey, and urgent political reckoning, Landscapes of Memory follows filmmaker Leah Galant as a search for her family’s Holocaust history in Germany suddenly collides with the turbulence of the present. What begins as a return to inherited trauma becomes something far more immediate when Galant is detained while filming a pro-Palestine protest, forcing her to confront how memory is not only preserved but actively enforced, contested, and weaponized. As she moves through a landscape saturated with monuments, from Stolpersteine embedded in city sidewalks to vast concrete memorials, she traces the cracks in Germany’s culture of remembrance and the rising tensions that surround it. Her own family history, rooted in Holocaust survival and complicated by her father’s ALS diagnosis, runs through the film as she records intimate voice notes with him while his ability to speak steadily fades. The film builds a tense and deeply human portrait of memory as a battleground.
