Shot over three days in August 2023 at Seattle’s Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, Powwow People by Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation and Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) transforms a gathering into something both cinematic and communal: a living, breathing portrait of contemporary Indigenous life. Rather than observing from a distance, Hopinka actively helped shape the powwow itself, inviting dancers, singers, drummers, vendors, and families from across the powwow circuit to come together in a shared space of celebration and creation. What emerges is an immersive vérité experience that unfolds like a single continuous day, guided by the voice of master of ceremonies Ruben Little Head, where preparation, performance, humor, and ceremony flow into one another with hypnotic rhythm. From the earliest arrivals to a spellbinding 30-minute unbroken dance sequence, the film becomes a vibrant assertion of presence and continuity across generations.
