Notes From The Program Director
Week of August 11th, 2023
Just a few brief notes from me today, asBarbieandOppenheimercontinue, gracing our screens for another wonderful week! I’m also in the throes ofDoctoberprogramming--finalizing invitations for the festival films (so many good ones this year!), booking films that accept the invitations, talking with the filmmakers about visiting Bellingham for the festival, and coordinating with Pickford staff as we all look towards the festival and start putting things into place for our yearly October celebration of brand new documentaries. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for Doctober news, especially right around early September!
In addition toBarbieandOppenheimer, a quick reminder that the final film of ourRooftopseries, Hot Girl Summer,Mad Max: Fury Road, will be playing on top of the Commercial St. parking garage this Friday, August 11.Fury Roadis one of the best action films of the last decade, with a fabulous performance from Charlize Theron, playing the one-armed Furiosa. The party starts at 7 pm, and the movie starts at dusk. As always, our Rooftop films are free. Bring a chair --and a blanket for the evening chill --and let the fun begin!
Finally, be sure to snap up a ticket or two for the next film in our popular monthlyStudio Ghibliseries,Kiki’s Delivery Service, playing four times this week, three dubbed screenings and a one subtitled screening: this Saturday afternoon (1:30 pm); Sunday morning (10 am); Wednesday morning (10 am); and Wednesday evening, subtitled (7:45 pm).Kikiis one of Hayao Miyazaki’s lesser-seen films perhaps, compared to others likeMy Neighbor TotoroandSpirited Away, but it’s no less inventive, showcasing the stunning creativity of the Ghibli team, and much likeTotoro, it is gentle enough for younger children but designed to delight everyone with its endearing characters, emotional depth, and beautiful animation. Don’t miss the chance to see it on the big screen!
