Beyond Utopia -- Tues., Oct. 31 -- two showtimes

1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture -- Wed., Nov. 1 -- two showtimes

Black Barbie -- Wed., Nov. 1 -- two showtimes

And in honor of Halloween week this week, we have an offering of three very special film events:

Second, the final installment of our Scream King series is here with Carrie. Stephen King stories have had the tendency to tempt some of the great modern directors as we’ve seen with The Shining (Stanley Kubrick), Christine (John Carpenter), and now Brian De Palma. There’s nothing quite like a De Palma film, almost always wearing his love for Alfred Hitchcock on his sleeve but also always bringing his own brand of panache to the mix. Much like the shower scene in Psycho, the prom scene from Carrie has rightly gone down in history as one of the most electrifying sequences of all time: using similar musical shrieks like the string score in Psycho and giving us a shocking shower much like Marion’s Psychoexperienced, but all reinvented so brilliantly that the Carrie prom scene is both a loving homage to Hitchcock and very much DePalma’s own creation. And Sissy Spacek, of course, and Piper Laurie, give us some of the most iconic characters and performances in movie history, so our delight in seeing them together on the big screen again is tempered by sadness with the recent passing of Laurie. R.I.P. to a brilliant actress.

Carrie plays on Halloween night, so we’d love to see everyone costumed in their “Carrie prom” best, and we’ll have a photo booth for those who would like to commemorate the night in pictures (we promise there will be minimal dumping of pig’s blood). And for those who’d like to continue the prom after the film, head over to our friends at The Great Northern Bottle Shop, just around the block on Commercial St., for a Carrie-prom after party.
